This orientation will cover the three sections of the toolkit and will highlight example situations in which the toolkit will be most useful for school nurses. The content will include these topics:

  • Introduction and Overview of Type 1 Diabetes
    • Evidence-based information about T1D and T1D screening
    • Online T1D resources for school nurses
    • T1D decision tree for referrals
  • Helpful handouts for parents/caregivers
  • Sample communications for the school to disseminate T1D information to the community

Learning Objectives

At the end of this orientation the SN will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of screening for T1D.
  • Utilize the decision trees to refer students and their families to their health care providers for screening.
